Tiree

Tiree, N gauge roughly 1963, but Grouping and Nationalisation never happened.

The Name Tiree is chosen because this layout was originally built on the Island of Tiree, however, since I went to school using the Kyle line the layout’s style is now that of Highland Railways.

Tiree occupies a 16ft by 7 foot Square, but the layout is L shaped so the inside of the L is the operator space. The main boards are 2 ft deep but have scenic extensions hung on the front, making them 2ft 10inches or 3 ft 2 inches deep.

Due to Tiree being originally a home heavy layout, she is now on three, 4 wheel trolleys with other  boards transported inside the trolleys.

There is still much work to be done, wiring between boards is under way. Some buildings still need construction

July 2024

Over the years I’ve worked from board 1, through to board remaking the scenery to look more Highland, then boards 5 and 6 were created in a similar style. Those two boards have been wired up tested, and buildings added. Board 6 has now gone into storage, boards 3, and 4 retrieved.

Having done some repairs due to rats having a nibble at the scenery, work will commence at the junction of boards 4&5, a bridge which will need construction to hide aboard join, and a cattle grid to hide the board join on a road.

Once that is done, board 5 will join board 6 in storage. Then onto boards 3 and 4.

For some reason the junction of boards 3 and 4 are not lining up, one board has widened compared to the other, so one track aligns when the other 4 don’t . This section has worked previously at the first Stalham show!!! Both boards have the same original contractors build method of a box frame topped with Sundela, both boards were stored together. Leaving that for a while to see what happens..

Meanwhile, wiring needs completion especially the inter-board connections.,

Two Highland railways signal boxes and a water tower need making. Then the main station building also needs construction, which will be a model of Stromeferry station when it still had its overall roof. This will help hide another board join. The final building should be An Lodhlann, the former Macbraynes terminal building, now used as a museum of Tiree
